It’s Okay to Pay for the Person Behind You at Starbucks

Are we really policing kindness now?

A few years ago, I was at the Starbucks drive-through. A common Monday morning occurrence. I was tired. I was grouchy. I hadn’t prepared my meals for the work day ahead of me.

I ordered my breakfast and lunch and drove up to hand the cashier my credit card.

“The car in front of you took care of it,” she said.

I jolted awake. I couldn’t believe a stranger had done that for me. For the rest of the day, I told anyone who would listen. It was such a kind and unexpected gesture that it touched me. It inspired me to look for ways I could be kind to others too. For no other reason.

When I got home from work that day, I shared the experience with my boyfriend at the time. He was less than impressed.

But they could have given that money to charity…

But you can get your own Starbucks…

I thought he was being overly critical and didn’t let him burst my bubble.

For the last few years, I’ve almost completely forgotten that experience. Then I saw this Facebook post. (I don’t remember the exact words, but you’ll get the point.)
